On finding a research question from Locke et al. (1999):

All research emerges from a perceived problem...Sometimes the difficulty rests simply in the fact that we don't understand how things work and have the human itch to know. At other times, we are confronted by decisions or the need for action when the alternatives or consequences are unclear (page 45).
